"Grandma! I want chocolate milk out of a fancy cup!"

My niece belted this proclamation from the dining room table while I was home over Thanksgiving. As my mom, her grandma, said, "Ok, Andi, just a second," I had two thoughts:

"Chocolate milk?"

"Fancy cup?"

No sooner was I questioning my sanity than my mom walked over to my niece with a cup of chocolate milk in a crystal glass that used to belong to my grandmother.

Wow, have times changed.

When I was growing up, chocolate milk was never kept in the house, and on the off-chance that I did get chocolate milk, it was from a single-serve carton at Schroeder Middle School, definitely not served in crystal, fancy cups.

As I wrapped my head around what was happening, my niece quietly enjoyed her milk.

It is easy to get caught up in how things should be, to accept things as status quo for no other reason than someone saying that is how it is. But sometimes, we should pause and ask ourselves, "Why?"

Why can't I keep chocolate milk in the house?

Why can't I have chocolate milk in a fancy cup?

Why do others tell me that chocolate milk is for kids?

Sometimes, we need to pause and figure out where our thought inputs are coming from and why we think the way we do.

"Hey Mom! I think I'll have some chocolate milk in a fancy cup, too!"
